Applicants must sign an authorisation for a police officer to make inquiries, and
make a written report to the commission, about the character, and any criminal record,
of the applicant.
Race bookmaking licenses are issued for a period of two years and expire
on 30 June. A licensed ACT race bookmaker may field at the three codes of racing:
Canberra Racing Club thoroughbred meetings, Canberra Harness Racing Club meetings
and Canberra Greyhound Racing Club meetings; subject to club rules and regulations.
Renewal notices for Race Bookmaking Licenses are sent to race bookmakers in
February.
In cases where a race bookmaker requires an agent to stand in their stead, for a
meeting or a number of meetings, a race bookmaker must apply to the Commission for
a Race Bookmaker's Agent Licence.
Prospective race bookmakers must obtain a security guarantee prior to applying for
a licence. Membership to the NSW Bookmakers Co-operative will enable a bookmaker
to obtain a security guarantee. For further details please contact the Chairman
of the ACT Bookmakers Association - Mr John Cramp on telephone number (02) 6288
8255.
In applying for a race bookmaker's licence, the applicant must submit to a character
check by the Australian Federal Police and identify all convictions, particularly
those relating to illegal betting offences.
