Getting Played is a high school education program that helps students understand the risks of gambling and gambling-like features in games. It’s based on research around how young people think about and take part in gambling and gaming. The program has support from the ACT Education Directorate.
What does the program include?
- Online TQI accredited training for teachers so they feel confident teaching the program. Access this eLearning via the Healthy Children’s Learning Hub.
- Classroom slides and worksheets for years 7 to 10. These can be used in wellbeing, health, maths, English, media, business, or pastoral care classes.
- Planning tools to help teachers get ready to teach the program.
- Information sheets for school leaders, wellbeing teams, parents and carers.
- Promotional materials for school newsletters and social media
- A flyer about help available from the ACT Gambling Support Service.

Teachers, parents and carers can watch a video (24 minutes long) that explains the issues. This video is also part of the teacher training.
Program development
The Commission worked with Refraction Media to create this program. They talked to teachers and students in ACT schools to help design the materials. You can learn more about this co-design process from the Refraction Media Insights Report (Executive Summary [PDF 117KB]).
A group of experts then helped guide the program. This included school representatives, researchers, youth organisations and people who have experienced gambling harm.
Fair Play digital hub
There’s also a website called Fair Play. It has tools and information to help understand and prevent online gambling harm among children and young people. It was developed by the ANU Centre for Gambling Research and the Youth Coalition of the ACT, and funded by the Commission.
