2024 ACT Gambling Survey

The Gambling and Racing Commission conducts a gambling prevalence survey approximately every 5 years to assist in monitoring the social and economic impacts of gambling in the ACT.

The 2024 ACT Gambling Survey was conducted by Central Queensland University (CQUniversity) on behalf of the Commission.

Over 10,000 randomly selected adult Canberrans were interviewed via mobile phone across August and September 2024. Participants provided information on their gambling participation, expenditure and gambling harm (including harm from significant others).

The survey explored issues experienced by people who gamble, their partners and families, and flow-on effects to communities. It captured emerging trends in gambling activities, gambling harm, and help-seeking within the ACT community over the last 12 months. It is the first time gambling trends have been explored in the ACT since COVID-19.

The report concludes 'two important trends are particularly notable in the current findings. First, despite a modest decline in overall gambling participation, gambling harm and problems have remained remarkably persistent. Second, this persistence may be partly attributable to the increasing popularity of online wagering, which is shown in the analyses to be a higher-risk form of gambling.'
